Rameswaram is one of the most visited pilgrimage towns in South India, and a taxi from Madurai is the most comfortable way to reach it. The drive is roughly 170 km and usually takes three to four hours, depending on traffic and how long you stop on the way.
Route
Most taxis take the Madurai – Paramakudi – Ramanathapuram road and cross the Pamban bridge onto the island. The highway is in good condition and the drive is easy for families with children and elders.
What to see
- Ramanathaswamy Temple and its long pillared corridors
- Agni Theertham beach
- Dhanushkodi, the ghost town at the tip of the island
- Pamban bridge and the sea views around it
Best time to visit
October to March is the most pleasant season. Summer afternoons are hot, so start early in the morning and keep time for rest.
Tips for your taxi trip
- Leave Madurai by 5:30 or 6:00 AM so you reach before the temple crowd builds up
- Tell the driver if you want a darshan break or a stop for breakfast
- A one-day trip is possible, but an overnight stay lets you visit Dhanushkodi without rushing
